The small town of Kuhmo is located on the eastern border of Finland, 600km north of Helsinki. The town enjoys an idyllic setting surrounded by pristine countryside, beautiful lakes, wildlife and national parks. As well, Kuhmo is renowned for hosting a world-class Chambers Music Festival every July that lasts for two weeks.

Spend 4 nights at the delightful Kalevala Hotel in Kuhmo in July 2018, the perfect base from which you can enjoy the distinguished festival and join in the celebrations surrounding Finland’s cultural and arts scene. During your stay in Kuhmo, dine on authentic cuisine, discover beautiful nature and enjoy an array of summer activities, you will even have the opportunity to join an optional overnight bear and wildlife watching experience!

Prices start from £1,485.00 per person, based on two adults sharing a twin/double room.

Day 1: UK – Kajaani Airport

Fly from the UK to Kajaani Airport in Finland, via Helsinki.

On arrival you will be collected and transferred to the Hotel Kalevala where you will stay for four nights. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the hotels grounds, admire the idyllic setting or enjoy a traditional Finnish sauna. (D)

Day 2: Kuhmo

After breakfast, cycle into the centre of Khumo (3km) to enjoy your first Kuhmo Chamber Music concert at the local church. Afterwards, continue on to the Khumo Arts Centre to learn about the history of the festival and local area.

Return to Hotel Kalevala for an afternoon guided tour called ‘Story of the Wind, Ice and Water’ where you can admire 10,000 year old primeval scenery that was formed during the Ice Age. Take a relaxing sauna before an evening concert at the arts centre and enjoy a three course dinner at Salakamari, a pop up restaurant renowned for its gourmet menu, festival wines and where audiences and artists meet after the concerts. Day 3: Kuhmo

Today is all about enjoying more concerts, Kalevala, saunas and bears! After breakfast, cycle to Kuhmo for a festival presentation called ‘Heart of the Day’ which takes place in Salakamari. Then it’s onto the church for a late morning Chambers concert.

This afternoon begins with a visit to Juminkeko, the Information Centre of Kalevala; an exhibition and multimedia programme on Finland’s national epic, the Kalevala. Juminkeko has one of the largest collections of various editions of the Kalevala in the world. Return to your hotel for a relaxing sauna and dinner before heading back into Kuhmo for a selection of evening Chamber concerts.

This evening you can opt to join an overnight bear-watching experience (additional charge). (B,D)

Day 4: Kuhmo

After breakfast, spend the morning at the Petola Visitor Centre where you can browse the permanent exhibition of large carnivores – brown bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine that are native to this area. After, you will be transferred to central Kuhmo for a chamber music concert in the church, followed by another at the Konito School.

This afternoon you will join a guided boat tour that takes you on a leisurely journey back to your hotel. When you arrive, you will be greeted with a traditional bonfire picnic at the Kota ‘teepee’ just next to the lake. Your last evening in Kuhmo will be spent at a memorable evening concert. (B,L,D)

Day 5: London

After breakfast in the hotel, enjoy some leisurely free time before your transfer takes you back to Kajaani Airport for your return flight back to the UK. (B)
