We are delighted to offer you the chance to journey across India under the guidance of historian and author, John Keay. This expert-led, guided tour is being offered by our travel group's Tour Operator, Pettitts Travel.

Highlights include a visit to the Red Fort in Delhi, exploring Lucknow with its rich Indian culture and British colonial history and ancient Varanasi, situated on the banks of the sacred River Ganges and one of the oldest surviving cities in the world. Especially memorable here are the beautiful Aarti religious ceremonies that take place beside the river at sunset. Early one morning, you will take a ride on a small rowing boat on the River Ganges to silently view the sunrise and witness the pilgrims who perform their daily rituals in the lifting mist. Experience the extreme city contrasts in Kolkata, the gateway to Eastern India, noted for some wonderful landmarks of the British Raj. Kolkata is an intensely human city and the warmth and charm of its people, once experienced, is never to be forgotten.

Bhubaneswar offers a wonderful mix of both the ancient and modern and is situated on the edge of the lush green paddy fields of the Mahanadi Delta. Before heading back to Delhi for your return flight, head to Puri and visit one of Hindu India's foremost architectural treasure, the World Heritage Site of Konark, famous for its Sun Temple.

This 16 day tour, taking place in March 2018, offers a unique opportunity to discover some of India's best-kept secrets in the company of one of India's outstanding authorities, John Keay, who has written over twenty books, of which half deal with Indian subjects. Among them, Into India remained the standard introduction to the country for over thirty years, India: A History is the best-selling history of the country – in India itself as well as worldwide – and India Discovered will be found of particular relevance to this tour.
